The Netherlands is lending 200 orange cruiser bicycles to New York City in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York.
Are New Yorkers ready for the Dutch bicycle?
Some, like Club Monaco, see the World War II-era bike as so retro that it’s become fashion-forward.
But City Room isn’t quite so sure that the masculine, messenger-centric bicycling culture is ready to embrace a style of lumbering, erect bicycling-riding that is reminiscent of, well, Pee Wee Herman.
Either way, 200 Dutch-style bicycles are coming to New York as part of the 400th anniversary of the Henry Hudson’s landing in New York City. Not just any Dutch bicycles, orange Dutch bicycles. “Very orange,” as the deputy mayor, Robert C. Lieber, put it at a ceremony introducing the bicycles.
They were presented by the Dutch government to the city on Thursday morning on Queen’s Day, essentially the Dutch equivalent of the Fourth of July. (In the Netherlands celebration of Queen’s Day, Queen Beatrix and the royal family were the target of car attack that killed at least four other people.)
